CULTIVATION OF PLANTS MEDICINAL, AROMATIC and CULINARY. An Indicative list;
Introduction :
Project initiator, Yogendra (www.themetoursindia.com, Drishti Excursion in ‘About Us’) is a deeply committed environment activist and business person. He travels extensively and picks up long term public interest issues for creative action. Past V P Rotary International – Thane West, he heads its Indo-Swedish rural health care project.
A Brief History : Cause-and-effect of neglect on endangered Medicinal Plants and Aromatic herbs is a self-initiated study project since 1998. It revealed that although Ayurveda is held in reverential esteem, as an industry it is fragmented and unregulated.
Where the source of raw material is concerned, easy to grow fast moving herbs are grown and traded in abundance. However, a source of ‘rare’ herbs is generally kept ‘secret’ and mostly pillaged. Consequently a number of herbs are now categorised as ‘endangered’.
To overcome this, the Government set up a Medicinal Plant Promotion board in 2001.
As Himalayas is known to be the source of rare herbs, in early 2000 Yogi undertook an extensive tour of newly created Central Himalayan state – Uttaranchal and created a consortium to grow some of the endangered species in their natural habitat.
The consortium included the Managing Director of a 100 yr old Ayurvedic drugs manufacturing company, its Director Quality Control and Production manager of 40 years experience.
Pilot projects for cultivation of Swertia Chiraita and Pichroriza Kurooa are underway.
Several Scientists, Universities, Non Government Organisations, etc. have helped create standardised cultivation process for Salampanja, Salam mishri, Jatamansi, Kuth, etc.
Growth Opportunities :
Success of the project has encouraged other farmers to offer their land for cultivation. The project is poised to expand at 300% every year from 6 acre plot it started with.
For long-term clients ALps can bring 100 acres of alpine land under cultivation each year.
A single plot of 200 acres and another 400-acre site can be brought under our management and prepared for dedicated client(s) in 30 months or so.
Along with pioneering skills to grow high altitudes herbs in the Himalayas, our network capabilities are also used to grow herbs and aromatic plants in other parts of India.
Our silent efforts have been recognised by several key functionaries of federal and several state governments. Taking into account Sub-continent India’s geographic and climatic spread we offer to create structures to cultivate plant species under customer specified conditions. State and federal support can also be availed.
In Maharashtra we have taken a 22 acres tissue cultured Bixa [Annota-] planting project. In second phase this extends to 52 acres mixed medicinal plants cropping.
Local television featured this project in a popular farmers programme.
By 2006 we are posed to have 300 acres under contract farming.
WE ARE NOW WORKING WITH INDIAN PLC’S
